Course Description

The festival, now in its seventh year, is a collaboration with Castila (Spanish language school of Albaicin, Granada), and in past years has attracted as many as 56 young musicians from major conservatories and music programs around the world. They came to Granada to specifically study and perform Spanish Song with our distuingished faculty that has  included, Teresa Berganza, Miguel Zanetti and Jose María Gallardo del Rey. This year's masterclasses will be taught by Jorge Robaina and Festival Director, Nan Maro Babakhanian . The Flamenco faculty , Juan Miguel Gimenez Miranda and Antonio Vallejo are pioneers and advocates of teaching the art to the younger generation in Granada, and bring the best talent from Granada to perfom and teach with them during the festival.  New this year, BYU voice professor, Arden Hopkins will teach a class of vocal repertoire including Latin American works. The nightly programming also features faculty recitals and participant concerts that are mostly free to the public. Last year featured a special concert of Mezzo Soprano, Sahoko Sato, winner of the first annual "Miguel Zanetti International Vocal Competition, Interpretation of Spanish Song" held in New York. This year's competition winner (held during the TCU Summer Institute of Art Song in Spanish) will perform on the penultimate day of the festival. (for more information see the first page of this web)

Special concerts are performed at  the hotel, El Ladron de Agua, a Granada sponsor, that is currently collaborating to produce a Cd of a previous faculty concert in hommage to the poet Juan Ramon Jimenez featuring the world premiere of two songs written by faculty member, Jose María Gallardo del Rey, to poems previously unpublished, and recently released by this unique hotel built in hommage to the poet.

This years programming will feature our new collaboration with Spain's association of composers, "Fundación Autor/SGAE",  The Tourist Office of Spain in New York  and the Flamenco Festival Organization. The new affiliation promises premiere performances of works by  two of Spain's most important composers, Anton Garcia Abril and Consuel Diez as well as works by Jose Luis Turina and Joaquin Turina.  This special concert offered in conjunction with the Alaria Trio will be performed in Carnegie Hall , NY in February (see first page of web) and then in Madrid and Granada. The Festival programming will also the 19th century with works selected from 5 volumes of Spanish Song edited by Celsa Alonso published by SGAE/ICCMU. As part of is collaboration with Fundación Autor/SGAE, Project Canción Española will be compiling a selection of the 5 volumes into an anthology with IPA transcriptions and translations.

The faculty of the Festival, Interpretation of Spanish Song is very proud that many of participants who have attended over the years have gone on to form duos, performing art song in Spanish around the world, as well as obtain contracts with major companies. Among the students who have participated in the past are an American tenor who, after returning to Los Angeles, won an audition to sing a leading role in the LA Opera production of “Las Goyescas” under the baton of Placido Domingo

The seven day event includes courses for guitarists, pianists and singers includes daily masterclasses of performance and interpretation for solo and duo groupings while students of flamenco participate in daily studio workshops. In addition, students receive private coaching from faculty as warranted. Selected soloists and duos participate in public masterclasses and perform in student concerts during the festival.
Additional courses of Spanish Diction and Basic Grammar and/or Flamenco Rhythm, Dance and Guitar Classes are offered and can be added to the participants daily schedules during the festival. Students can also attend an exhibition of Spanish vocal scores and seminars hosted by the Center for Musical Documentation of Andalucía on topics important to research in Spanish vocal repertoire as well as exhibition of the Songs of Manuel de Falla, mounted specially by the "Archivo Manuel de Falla" in sponsor hotel, "El Ladron de Agua" for the V edition of the Festival.
